Fun Holiday Card Idea

Ml811_1298_card_tree_xl

Just saw this on Ali Edwards blog this morning.  It's from Martha Stewart, who, by the way is doing a fun Christmas Workshop
There are certainly some clever ideas there!  I'm loving this way
of hanging holiday cards.  And when your done with the cards, Ali
has a clever idea to scrapbook them all, using a Marvy Giga Square punch
(we sell them...it's the purple one).  It's just a hair over 2"
& you punch out the areas of the card you like the most, of the
holiday photos that tell the story & create a layout similar to this  one on Ali's blog (clever, don't you think?)

Thanksgiving

Can you believe Thanksgiving is just 2 short days away?  Me
neither!  I'll be sending out our weekly email shortly, but wanted
to remind you of a few things first (don't get our weekly email?
send me your name & email address to aboutmemories@safeaccess.com
& I'll add you to the list!)

  • The food drive continues until Wednesday, November 26th at 3
pm.  At that time, we'll take the cans we've collected to the food
bank by La Fonda.  We've collected a lot of cans & hope to
collect even more!  Thank you!  Read about the food drive by clicking here.

  • We're closing at 3 pm on Wednesday.  We'll re open at 10 am on "Black Friday" and will have some KILLER deals for you!  Check back here for the details!

  • The post below really needs your comments.  Let your voice be heard!

  • It's not too late to make little Thanksgiving treats for your
celebration!  We have an adorable K & Company Party in a Pad
kit that includes:  napkin rings, place mats for the kids with
activities, decorations, goodie boxes & MORE!  What fun for the
kids...or even the adults to put together!

  • Mark your calendars now for Santa's visit!  He'll be here
Saturday, December 12th from 9 am to 11 am.  Just bring a new,
unwrapped toy for the Law Enforcement Toy Drive (one or more per person
being photographed, if you can) & have you family photo taken with
Santa for FREE by Colleen Timmons.  We'll have photos & a cd
ready for you the following week.  I wanted to point this out early
because we all know what killer deals you're going to find this
weekend.  Add a few toys & things for kids in need to your
holiday shopping list.  It won't cost you much & will be good
for your heart as well as the kids!  Every year, the toy drive runs
short of things for teens...curling irons, flat irons, hair dryers,
iPod type things, handheld video games, you know the kind of stuff teens
like.  And babies are always in need, too.  I'm so very
passionate about this toy drive.  I'd rather not receive presents
myself.  I want them all to go to the kids.  Honestly.

More to tell you about....check back later today!

Some things in the works

So I have some things in the works that I can't quite tell you about
yet.  But soon, I promise!  And they're all good...really
good!  But I have one last question for you before I can finish my
plans and I'd really like to hear your comments!

Right now my dilemma is this:  we're going back to being open 6
days soon.  Would you rather we be open on Sundays (from 11 to 3)
or Mondays (10 to 6)?  I have no problem working a few hours on a
Sunday if you think that's a day you'd like to come in.  Otherwise,
we'll go back to being open Monday thru Saturday.  What would work
best for YOU (don't worry about what you think I want...I wouldn't be
asking if I wasn't interested)?

Soon this will all be clear, I promise.  And the more help you can give me, the better!

Edited
to add 11/25/08:  Keep posting the comments!  Or send me an
email at aboutmemories@safeaccess.com.  It seems like you all are
running neck & neck on the Sunday vs. Monday issue.  Would
definately like some more feedback...and I thought of another
question:  Is there a night of the week you wish we were open
later?  Every night?  Working on the calendar & the other
"thing" is so much fun, but I can't do it without you & your input!

And the winner is...

Vickie W. !  Thanks for commenting on classes & store
hours.  I really appreciate the input!  You're the proud owner
of 5 beautiful sheets of holiday paper...see you soon!

Twilight the movie.

Movieposter2

Finally the movie we've been obsessing about is here!
Yeah!  Those of you new to the blog may not know that everyone we
know has read the Twilight books.  All 4 of them.  Me.
My mom.  Sherry.  Bridget.  Rachel.  Jeannie.
My cousin.  A great many of our customers.  My little friend
MacKenzie has just started them.  As a matter of fact, Kendall read
the first 3 in 6 days (all 1800 + pages).  It was quite an
accomplishment for anyone, but especially for her.  Never had she
shown an interest in reading until these books.  Then it became her
obsession.  She's read them all several times.  Pretty cool,
actually.

Anyway, I had bought Kendall & I tickets to
the midnight showing but due to a school conflict had to trade them for
Friday tickets.  Boy was Kendall ticked!  I got lots of
comments like, "school is only important to YOU!  This movie is
important to ME!"   Yes.  Well then.  So we went
tonight to the 6:30 pm showing.  We got to the theater at 4:30 pm
to wait in line.  Funny thing is, we could have gone to that 4:30
show...there was room...but Kendall insisted we wait for the 6:30
show.  Anticipation, maybe?  The movie was everything she
hoped for.  She LOVED it!  Her friend Leah LOVED it.  Don
liked it.  I liked it.  I wish I could say I loved it, but as
is normally the case, the book is SO much better.  But reading the
book helped understand the movie, because you know the characters so
well that you don't need all the character development.  It might
be hard for someone who hasn't read it to understand why Bella falls so
deeply in love with Edward from just the movie.  And then there was
silly stuff...when Bella opened her bedroom door for the first time,
her bed was NOT on the wall I pictured it and it really bugged me.
Carlisle was just too white.  And Edward?  Well, he's a fine
looking actor, but he wasn't what my mind pictured.  (Victoria
& James were perfect!)  That being said, I did quite enjoy the
movie.  As a matter of fact, I'll be seeing it again.

December Classes & a contest at the end...

December brings the following classes (photos to come shortly!):

Decemberagain

There's so much you won't want to miss!  Each of the Holiday Card Classes feature 5 super fun cards.  Just think, when you leave, you'll be 5 cards ahead on your list!

The Holiday Decor Class
is going to be SO fun!  We'll be making "snowballs" that you've
seen hanging from the ceiling at the store, a cute snowman goodie box
& a chipboard piece featuring santa.  All so adorable!

The Holiday Gifts to Give Class will be making a mini album that's a gift card holder...oh my gosh, SO cool!  And a couple of other clever gifts, too!

Then there's the Holiday Calendars Class.  You'll make an adorable calendar that is ready to give as a holiday gift!

Of course Midnight Madness
is a great time to catch up on card making, finishing off those last
minute holiday scrapbooks (or starting them :) ) or even just taking
some time for yourself!

Pictures with Santa is
our annual event that features local professional photographer Colleen
Timmons.  Colleen takes your photos with our very popular Santa for
a donation of a new, unwrapped toy for the Law Enforcement Toy Drive
(one toy per person being photographed, please).  In return, you
get professional photos & a CD with your photos on it that you can
then make into holiday cards & gifts for family.  How wonderful
is that?

We can't wait to see you for these exciting classes & events!

I
was thinking about adding an event to the week of the 17th but want
your input on it.  I thought it would be fun to have a gift
wrapping party.  Bring your gifts to wrap & an appetizer &
then we'll all wrap our gifts together.  There's not a fee...just a
place to go with plenty of room (and privacy) to wrap your holiday
gifts.  I think it'll be fun!  Leave a comment about what night works best for you.

Also,
I'm getting ready to work on the next quarter class schedule & want
to know what YOU would like to see on it.  Here are the questions
I'd like you to think about:

  • What days are classes best for you?

  • What times are best for you?

  • What classes do you want to see offered?

  • What hours do you wish the store were open?

Just leave a comment below or, if you wish your
answers to be private, shoot me an email at
aboutmemories@safeaccess.com.  You're comments are SO important to
us!  Thank you!

And you know, I just asked you to give me a whole lot of comments, so I think I'll have a random drawing.  Comments must be posted by Monday, November 24th at noon.  I'll select one winner to receive a collection of holiday papers.  Not too bad for just answering a few questions!

November Page Contest

Here are the November Page Contest Entries.  Stop by before
November 30th to cast your vote!  Winner gets a $20 About Memories
& More gift certificate & we'll be printing a calendar with all
the winners throughout the year!  Good luck!  (click on the

We R Memory Keepers Albums

  Linen

We R Memory Keepers albums have
arrived!  Ring albums are all the rage...you can easily add &
remove pages from your albums, the pages are easy to turn, they lay
flat.  We have a complete collection of both the Classic Leather
& the Linen albums in 12x12 Ring...just in time for the
holidays!  Why not give someone an album & a pack of photo
pages as a gift?  They can choose to scrapbook or just slide the
photos into the pages.  Either way, you're contributing to
preserving their photos.

And why not start the new year by getting a
head start on your photo project?  These are the albums I've
chosen to use for my own photo project.  I have over 30...yes, I
know, that's crazy! What's crazier, is that they're all filled to
capacity!  You can check out my photo project here
And with the canned food drive that we're having you can save up to 20%
off your entire purchase (until Thanksgiving) just by bringing in cans
of food (click here for details)

And a little tidbit on We R...their company
has been making albums for more than 80 years!  Can you believe
that?  They have proven longevity...which means you'll be able to
get refill pages that fit for years to come!

Stickles Glitter Glue

Love the look of glitter but hate the mess?  Then Stickles are
just what you need!  A huge shipment of them just arrived...right
in time for the holidays!

Stickles

They come in tons of fun colors....candy cane...holly
leaf...diamond...just to name a few.  They have a fine
applicator tip that makes it easy to apply to your craft
projects.  And the best part?  It's NOT messy!  You
& your house...the family cat or dog...aren't covered in
glitter.  They add just a little bit of glitz...pizazz...something
special to your projects!

Allison

Remember Allison who worked for me for 2 years or so?

SCAN0007

She got married last year...and on November 10th, she had this beautiful baby boy:

Canned Food Drive

Beginning Tuesday, November 18th we'll be having a canned food
drive.  For every can of non-perishable food you bring we'll give
you 5% off your total purchase of non-sale merchandise*.  Here's
how it works:

1 can = 5%
2 cans = 10%
3 cans = 15%
4 cans = 20%

The
maximum discount is 20% but there is no limit to how many times you can
participate.  The food drive will be through Wednesday, November
26th and all food will be donated to the local food bank.  I for
one will be taking this opportunity to clean out my pantry to donate to
the food bank.  Really, who needs 7 bottles of salad
dressing?  (Yes, that's really what I found.)  I hope you'll
join me!

*limited to stock on hand.  Cannot be combined with any other discount or coupon.  Not valid on previous purchases.

Thank you!

Thanks to everyone who participated in our Customer Appreciation
Event this Saturday!  The turn out was GREAT!  We made 3 fun
cards & a memory pocket that everyone loved!  We really do love
our customers!

Prize winners will be called tomorrow...we have tons of fun prizes to give out!  I hope YOU won!

Gifts to Give: Gift Card Holder

DSC_0022

I made this fun little gift card holder for Kendall the other
day.  SO easy!  SO cute!  It started out as a Creative
Imaginations 3x6 board book ($3.99).  I used 4 sheets of double
sided cardstock & some matching embellishments from the Ink line
from Fiskars.  I cut all the paper to 3 x 6 then decorated the
pages.  The pockets inside are made from that same paper.  I
just LOVE it!  It holds 6 gift cards, and I figure even if they're
all just $5 or $10 a piece, it's a really nice gift!  This Ink line
is PERFECT for teens, too!  Very funky....very hip!  And the
best part about this book?  From start to finish it only took about
an hour!
DSC_0015

I made fake gift cards for the display...each page has a gift card
on it & then the facing page has room for a note to her.
Here's the stuff I used:
DSC_0024

DSC_0034

Then I made this fun page using the Ink line as well.  I was
on a roll!  The scallop border is really Jenni Bowlin Sudios Crepe
Paper Ribbon.  I just ran a line of adhesive down the back of the
strip of green & gathered it all the way down.  Super
fast...super cute.  I LOVE that stuff!  Those of you that came
to Scrap Pink will remember that I used it on your tags for your
goodies...anyway, it adds some fun dimension to projects.

Fall Projects

DSC_0003

We made these fun Thanksgiving cards with my girlfriends the other
day.  My initial idea was that you'd put a photo on the front &
then that person would write what they're grateful for on the
back.  It was going to have a pocket for each card & be
attached with rings & ribbon.  Then I got lazy & stuffed 3
cards in one pocket....and I LOVE it! (the leaf I used is an EK Success
punch; the photo corners I made using 2 square punches)

DSC_0007

I made this the other day in no time flat.  It's a frame we had
lying around the store (11x14, I think with an 8x10 opening).  I
gathered up a few fall papers I love & my QuicKutz (fall &
family are Chemistry, colors is Rollerskate, the pumpkin & maple
leaf are QuicKutz, too).  Oh, and my trusty 2" square punch (the
purple one from Marvy, which is actually a little bigger than 2") and an
ink pad.  Isn't it cute?  I'm loving the fall theme of
it.  In person, the pumpkin & maple leaf have dimension, as do
the buttons & the epoxy charm in the lower left corner.  It was
fun to do...took NO time at all!  Maybe 30 minutes?

I didn't
get a photo of it yet, but the NAU gals did a really cool tree in the
front window of the store.  It's old tree branches with die cut
leaves on them that say what they're grateful for.  Stop by &
check it out!  It's super cute...and SUPER inexpensive!  Plus
EASY to re-create!

What paper crafting projects are you making for Thanksgiving?

And the winner is....

The question was:

Are you going to make any holiday gifts this year?
If so, what will you be making?
If someone were making you a gift this year,
what would be the ideal handmade gift to receive?

Random.org selected this comment as the winner of our contest:

This
year I will be making all of the presents that are sent to
grandparents, great grandparents, aunts and uncles. They will all be
receiving a canvas like the ones taught by the Glitz Girls. I also plan
on making some small gifts for all of my wonderful friends.

your friends?  We can do it any night of the week...cost is $10 per
person, with a minimum of 5.  You'll have space to wrap presents,
make cards, work on holiday projects, or even scrapbook for up to 6
hours.  And we'll have snacks on hand for you, too!  Or if
you'd just like to have a girls night out & have us design a project
for you, we can do that, too!  Cost for private classes starts at
$20 depending on the project & includes all the supplies.  It's
a great alternative to having a gift exchange!

A new baby

I'm a great Auntie again....congratulations Chris &
Heather!  As of this morning they have a new baby girl, 6 lbs 6 oz
named Annalise.  No photos of the baby yet, darn it, but here's the
mama to be (in the middle)

And here's big brother Ryan (LOVE this photo of him!)

And here's her daddy, Chris (with my bundle of joy)

Annalise got me to thinking, how many nieces & nephews do we
have?  I've never really counted them.  Hmmmm....Don's side
Bobby, Chris, Becky, Ryan, Mike, Aimee, Chad, James, Jamie, Michael, and
my side, David, Ray, AJ.  So 13 nieces & nephews (not
including spouses).  Now great nieces and nephews:  all on
Don's side, Annalise, Ryan, Ben, Sean, Logan, & Jadyn...so 6 for
now.  That's 19 total.  HOLY COW!  And I love each &
everyone of them:)

Anniversary Sale 11/5 thru 11/8/08

Did you know that November 1st was our 7 year
anniversary?  Hard to believe!  Time has just flown by!
Each year we celebrate the anniversary of About Memories and More with
an unbelievable sale.  This year is no different.  While I
can't give you all the details just yet, I can tell you that everything, and I mean everything
in the store will be on sale.  I can also tell you that those 10%
off punch card coupons (you know the ones that print on the bottom of
your receipts?) will be worth a bundle!  So gather
up your punch card coupons and join us Wednesday, November 5th thru
Saturday November 8th for some outstanding buys on all your favorite
scrapbooking & paper crafting supplies!

*ok.  So
there have to be a few rules.  The only coupons that will be
accepted during the sale are the 10% off punch card coupons (they offer
you 10% off a purchase or $5 off a class...sound familiar?).  Sale
is limited to stock on hand.  Sale does not apply to previous
purchases.

Scrapbook Inspiration via Ali Edwards

It's no secret that Ali Edwards is one of my idols.  That woman is talented.  I love her approach to scrapbooking...there are no wrong ways.  You're just telling a story.  Her book Life Artist is my most favorite scrapbooking book ever (we have a couple copies at the store).

Anyway, I was reading her blog this morning & todays post
is a bunch of pages that everyday people submitted to her for her week
in the life project.  If you are needing some inspiration, check
out that post.  They are simply AMAZING projects.  So
inspiring!

A Beautiful Family

Yesterday I had the honor of taking the Nelson Family photos.  Now bear in mind, I am not a professional.
I'm just a mom with a camera.  Jeannie is one of my favorite
people in the world...how could I decline?  But once again, it
reinforces that I want to take a hands on camera workshop here
I'm sure there are equally fabulous classes closer to home & less
expensive...if you know of them, please let me know.  There are
just some things I need help figuring out.

Here are a few of my favorites (I took 304 photos...it's an addiction, I think)

This is Alex.  He told me he loved me.  Melted my
heart.  And because he loves me, I got some excellent photos of
him.  What a crack up!

This is Emily.  She wasn't quite in the mood, but that's ok.  She's beautiful!

That's his football face...

What a cute family.

My favorite kind of photo...completely spontaneous!  I LOVE it!

I'm so excited...I met a blogging celebrity!

Oh my goodness was Saturday a good day!  The store was trashed
(what's not to love about that?)...we were changing out the Halloween
window to Christmas...I was covered in blue ink (a mistake I won't make
again)...creating new displays for the Christmas window (they're SO
cute!)...when in walks this gal who looked vaguely familiar to me...

DSC_0042

Meet Nancy Riley, the author of ISTAMP, a blog that I read religiously...oh my goodness!  This woman rocks
(we link to her blog on the right side of my page)  Nancy is SO
nice!  She and her husband were visiting Flagstaff because her
daughter was competing in a high school band competition at NAU.
She's a Stampin' Up demonstrator & working mom (we both have 14 year
olds...hers is a boy) & wife who just does it all.  I LOVE the
cards she makes...just love them!  We got to chat for a bit & I
just really admire her.  Her blog is amazing!  We've had our
blogs for about the same amount of time (I've been stalking hers for a
while) but in that time she's had almost 400,000 visitors...yes,
400,000!  AMAZING!   She posts mostly cards that are clever,
cute & make you want to copy them. Take a look when you get a
chance.  You won't be disappointed!

I am so glad we met....Nancy, thanks for coming to visit!

The same time Nancy was in the store, another "celebrity" was in the store...Ann Corbiere Scott.
Ann is a scrapbook teacher at several stores in the Valley, and she's
on the Rusty Pickle & Xyron design teams.  I didn't think to
take a photo with her...go figure, the chick with the camera glued to
her face forgot to take a photo...Ann was pretty fabulous herself!
Thanks for visiting!
